Dr. Frank Olufemi Akindolie was a gifted, German-trained doctor who built a successful medical practice in Lagos, Nigeria. He sadly and tragically died of liver cancer quite suddenly in August 2012, a truly devastating loss to many. Founded in April 2016 by Dr. Funke Abimbola MBE (nee Akindolie), Dr. Omowunmi Akindolie and Dr. Olufemi Akindolie Junior, the Akindolie Medical Scholarship was established to honour their father's memory in perpetuity whilst also supporting the pipeline of future UK junior doctors. This is important because morale amongst junior doctors is at an all time low due to the many challenges of working within an over-burdened healthcare system. Another key motivation and rationale for establishing this scheme is to create a pipeline of aspirational, visible role models through the scholarship awards.This privately funded scholarship is specifically aimed at supporting UK medical students from a minority ethnic background, a group that is under-represented within UK medical schools.
