I am part of a Non Profit group called Over Water Expeditions and based out of Williams MN. We are in the process of building a 30' York boat which we plan on sailing/rowing next spring. The York boat was built by the Hudson Bay Company to transport furs and other good up here in the north country. We want to teach the history of how the Voyagers used the waterways and the struggles that they encountered. One of the ways we want to accomplish this will be to dress in time period clothing, outfit our York boat with goods that were carried and give boat rides to children and adults. During this time we will then tell the stories and songs of these hearty men and talk about the people that they traded with. Our long term goals will be to travel the waterways here in Minnesota, tell our stories whenever we stop to whoever will listen. To observe the environment surrounding our waterway, testing the water quality, watching wildlife and recording everything using video, still photography and journaling. We will then report our findings on our website and to create a documentary about life on the water with interviews and stories from those who have used the waterways. We also want to bring our message to the public schools during the winter months to promote the use of the waterways in Minnesota and to tell the stories of those that came before us.
