Situated in the small market town six miles west of Swindon, Royal Wootton Bassett Town have been playing football since 1882, making the club one of the oldest in the county of Wiltshire. Alongside the other members of the Royal Wootton Bassett Sports Association, the club plays its games at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, a state-of-the-art facility opened in the summer of 2015, which boasts four grass pitches, a full-size artifical grass pitch and spacious clubhouse. Prior to that, the club had played for the majority of its existence at a ground going by the same, on land donated by local dignitary Gerard Buxton for sporting activities within the town.Run by dedicated volunteers, the club offer football to those of all ages and generations. Its youngest registered players are age 6, while the eldest Veterans team player is a sprightly 65 years old.The club's first team competes in the Hellenic League Premier Division (step five of the non-league pyramid), as well as the FA Cup and FA Vase. Meanwhile, its Development team are members of the Wiltshire Senior Football League. Bassett's Ladies team play in the South West Women's Football League Eastern Division (the sixth tier of women's football), and its youth sides compete in the North Wilts Youth League and Wiltshire County Girls League. An adult male Sunday team also operates in the Swindon Sunday League, with its Veterans side being ever-present participants in the Wiltshire FA Veterans Flexi League competitions. Over the last decade and a half the club has grown exponentially, with the establishment of a thriving Youth Section and – in more recent times – Ladies and Veterans section, and the club operates two dozen teams ranging from under 7s upwards. This growth led to the club being awarded Charter Development Club status by the FA before this was upgraded to Community Club status in 2008; Bassett were the first club in Wiltshire to achieve this.
