Today, there are virtually no sustainable housing options for individuals with autism when they become adults. They simply "age out"​ of the system. Recognizing the significant shortage of homes where adults with autism can live, a group of dedicated individuals has united to help fulfill this critical need by establishing Autism Communities, a privately-controlled and funded 501(c)(3) not for profit organization. The mission of Autism Communities is to provide adults with autism a home in a vibrant, nurturing community-type setting. Further, it is the organization's goal that each resident can enjoy a fulfilling, healthy lifestyle in a safe environment while having access to social, recreational, educational and employment opportunities. Founded in 1992 by Holocaust survivor, Boris Chartan, the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County (HMTC) showcases the history of the Holocaust and its lessons through education and community outreach. Its mission focuses on teaching about the dangers of anti-Semitism, intolerance, racism, bullying, and all other manifestations of bigotry.
