GIPO (the Global Internet Policy Observatory) monitors Internet-related policy, regulatory and technological developments across the world. The Observatory tool aims to share knowledge among all actors, including countries, NGOs and interest groups which may have been — thus far — marginalised in Internet debates and decisions.About the advisory groupIn order to attempt to ensure broad acceptance and engagement by the community, the tool needs to function in as neutral a manner as possible. For this, the sources of data used by the tool need to be selected with a view to eliminating ‘bias'. The European Commission and the team have decided to set up an Advisory Group to try to overcome these challenges.TasksGIPO's Advisory Group works independently from the services of the European Commission. Its main tasks are to:1. Provide guidance on all aspects of the evolution of GIPO, including – but not limited to — new technological solutions for the tool2. Publicise GIPO through their own institutions and networks3. Ensure that GIPO remains abreast of topics and that the challenge of ‘selectivity' or ‘bias' in source selection is minimised4.
