A 2020 UNDP Equator Prize winner Nashulai's mission is: Conserve Wildlife-Preserve Culture-Reverse Poverty. In 2016, facing poverty and biodiversity collapse on our land our community of 3,000 rallied together to create the first indigenous owned/run conservancy in East Africa. Under our mixed-use model pooling our 5000 acres, we tore down all fencing, creating a commons where we reverted to rotation grazing and reopened a key migration corridor. In just 4 years there's been a massive restoration of the ecosystem, home to several engendered species, an elephant nursery, and a bird sanctuary. We invested in education and funded sustainable development programs to benefit our entire community. We built a primary school, acquired a school bus, and started a communal gender parity Bursary Fund providing 62 children with post-primary education. We've hired residents as staff and our Cultural Training Institute provides skills for Maasai culturally-informed conservation jobs. We built a potable water system, reducing waterbornediseases and infant mortality. We empower women and girls through education, anti-FGM campaigns reaching over 1.5 million, and female-led co-operative enterprises. Responding to Covid-19, our Community Feeding program fed 28,520 people weekly during the 4-month starvation-inducing lockdowns up to 100km away, including in Tanzania, and provided over 100,000 people (without soap and water access) with hand sanitizer, educating them on Covid-19 precautions. Our long-term goal is to become a knowledge hub of Maasaliand, where Maasai and people from around the world can learn from our achievements and be trained to replicate our method.
