The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Washington University School of Medicine serves the three major missions in the care of women: patient care, education and research. In all that we do, the principles of collaboration, innovation and inclusiveness are evident. In clinical care, we practice evidence-based medicine and promote lifelong learning in our field. The care we provide falls along traditional academic lines, with eight divisions that represent the major clinical areas of the specialty. A majority of our clinical activity is provided at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the flagship hospital of BJC HealthCare. Our research programs are outstanding and we are currently the second highest NIH funded Obstetrics and Gynecology Department in the United States. Sarah K. England, PhD, Vice Chair, Research oversees all research endeavors; our basic science research division, the Center for Reproductive Health Sciences (CRepHS), which is directed by Indira Mysorekar, PhD, and the Division of Clinical Research. Our basic science and clinical research units intersect to perform some of the most exciting translational work in obstetrics and gynecology. We are also home to one of sixtransdisciplinary March of Dimes Prematurity Research Centers. This research focuses on fundamental mechanisms of preterm labor, which we hope will lead to successful interventions. Our four-year residency program is the cornerstone of our educational programs. We accept nine new residents every year, attracting outstanding candidates from around the country. We also have nationally recognized fellowship training programs in all of the major disciplines within our field, as well as learning opportunities for medical students, scientists and practicing physicians.
