The KYO is a charitable, not-for-profit, community-focused organization that takes pride in helping young people develop and cultivate a love for music, and to share it with the community.The KYO strives to make music accessible to all young musicians in the City of Peterborough and surrounding area, providing them with the opportunity to learn symphonic music and perform in an orchestral ensemble.The Senior Kawartha Youth Orchestra offers young musicians between the ages of 12 and 28 the opportunity to work under artistic director Alexander (Al) Cannon and the guidance of professional instrumental coaches and to have the experience of playing in an orchestra with their peers. This is an auditioned orchestra for the experienced musician. The Intermediate Kawartha Youth Orchestra (IKYO) is for children 8 and up that have 1-2 years experience on their instrument. Jeff Clements conducts this ensemble Thursday evenings.The Junior Kawartha Youth Orchestra (JKYO) is geared for children ages 8-14 who have a desire to learn to play and read music, but have little or no experience. This beginners group develops music skills under a team of experienced musicians and rehearse Wednesday evenings.Upbeat Downtown is a new barrier-free, fully-subsidized, after-school music program for children ages 8 to 12 in the City of Peterborough, fosters a sense of achievement and belonging, all while creating strength and beauty through music. This program launched in September 2021 with 25 children.
